Real-Time Performance Management (RtPM) provides performance monitoring to improve operations, prevent abnormal conditions, optimixe processes, and allow operations personnel to continually improve performance.

For applications of RtPM for petrochemical and refining are shown below.


Downtime Monitoring

Operations with hard-running, expensive machinery need to be vigilant about down-time, Defining down-time and measuring it accurately can make a huge difference in the effectiveness and profitability derived from machinery. An RtPM monitoring application for paper machine down-time generates events from sheet break detector signals, allows operators to log the down-time reasons and then add comments.


Material Balance

RtPM is being used to do material balances across the operation. Incoming materials are monitored then material movements are calculated based on flow rates and material compositions. A history of material movements is maintained and reported to business systems.


Process Performance Analysis

RtPM can be used to better understand porcess and production constraints, i.e. increase production by debottlenecking plant processes. A chemical plant used data collected by RtPM to identify several problems that caused the unstable operation of a liquid phase reactor. The catalyst stripper was flooding due to excessive reactor steam, which was caused by low catalyst activity and an undersized return pipeline from the stripper to the reactor. It was also determined that the steam traps on the reactor were too small, causing condensate buildup in the reactor jacket. To resolve the problem, additional catalyst was added and the steam to the reactor was reduced.


Process Monitoring

RtPM is consistently used by operations personnel for process monitoring (trending,etc.) and troubleshooting of key process parameters to determine the best path forward for the entire facility's operations. For example, RtPM can simultaneously monitor the process data, machine operating conditions, and quality parameters on chemical process to track whether the process is operating efficiently.
