POWER & UTILITIES

Most of the major ISOs and ITPs use Real-time Performance Management (RtPM) to improve asset utilization, match generation to load cost-effectively, ensure grid security and reliability, forecast loads accurately, and to conduct settlements.

For applications of RtPM for power and utility are shown below.

Power Generation Supplier Scheduling

T&D companies use RtPM Web-based products to provide generation scheduling information to power suppliers. RtPM is used to compare the actual output vs. scheduled output of all of their power market suppliers to determine how far they are off schedule. Corrective actions can t hen be put in place to meet demand.

Power Generation Fleet Outage Management

Power generation suppliers are using RtPM to better manage entire fleets of generator units including reducing unit outages. One major supplier stated that a 1% reduction (from 1,000 to 990 events) in forced outages would provide over $2 million per year in margin window, the resultant savings would be significantly higher. In addition, converting 1% of forced outages to planned outages would provide over $1.5 million per year in margin increase by shortening the downtime duration and scheduling the outage to a lower margin window.

Alarm Management

RtPM provides coordinated management of all alarms generated by the various control systems (Distributed Control System, Programmable Logic Controllers, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, etc.) and identifies opportunities to improve alarm management in the plant or distributed operations. Use RtPM alarm management to keep alarm histories, calculate alarm frequencies, exception reporting of alarms and sort alarms by type (operator, system, hardware, software).

IT / Systems Monitoring

RtPM is used to monitor the health of plant or corporate IT networks, including key statistics on the corporation's PI servers, interfaces, IT network infrastructures (bandwidth utilization, etc.) , ERP servers, business applications and wireless access points. Alerts are sent to to IT Systems management via email and pager.

Utilities Management

Determining real-time utilities consumption is at the heart of conservation and cost savings. Accurate information from RtPM provides the means and incentive for the operating division to reduce utility costs. Anticipating and responding to power fluctuations can be key to survival for power-hungry companies.
